Evocation littéraire: Proust employait l'expression "faire catleya", ne mettant qu'un seul "t", pour signifier métaphoriquement "faire l'amour", car Odette de Crécy était amoureuse cette fleur, in "Du côté de chez Swann". L'expression a gardé ce sens poétique à propos de l'érotisme amoureux. /
Literary evocation: Proust used the expression "faire catleya", putting only one "t", to metaphorically mean "making love", because Odette de Crécy was in love with this flower, in "Du Côté de Chez Swann ". The expression has kept this poetic meaning about romantic eroticism.

This painting evokes my inner flame, my desire to create.
A work as metaphor of artist.
A momemtum towards a mysterious call. A breath, an inspiration, an “aspiration”. A flame rises in arms of night towards Light it hopes for. It tears veil of darkness. It’s like flight of a butterfly that approaches the sky. Like a power of life defying dark forces assailing us.
I wanted to show the generosity of a loving, solitary and supportive heart. It is the offering of an emotion colored with hope.
Invitation made, invitation-party, to our feeling of unfinished business, to our dreams, to our own sacred fire too often stifled, to its living embers despite trials and obstacles. A sacred fire to which we do not burn ourselves but near which we warm ourselves.

ABSTRACTION LYRIQUE

 

Ce tableau évoque ma flamme intérieure, mon désir de créer contre vents et marées.
Une œuvre comme métaphore de l’artiste.
Un élan vers un appel mystérieux. Un souffle, une inspiration, une « aspiration ». Une flamme s’élève dans les bras de la nuit vers la Lumière qu’elle espère. Elle s’arrache du voile des ténèbres. C’est comme l’envol d’un papillon qui tutoie le ciel. Comme une puissance de vie défiant les forces obscures qui nous assaillent.
J’ai voulu montrer la générosité d’un cœur aimant, solitaire et solidaire. C’est l’’offrande d’une émotion colorée d’espérance.
Invitation faite, invitation-fête, à notre sentiment d’inachevé, à nos rêves, à notre propre feu sacré trop souvent étouffé, à ses braises vivaces malgré les épreuves et les obstacles. Un feu sacré auquel on ne se brûle pas mais près duquel on se réchauffe.

Pour ce tableau j'ai choisi de travailler le gris et ses nuances allant jusqu'au noir en contraste avec le blanc et le jaune pâle comme couleur naissante.

 

Pour l'écrivain et poète Victor Hugo, la base est le noir à partir duquel se déploie une échelle de gris jusqu'au blanc de la Lumière. Les autres couleurs valent pour leur contraste avec le noir.

For this painting I chose to work on grey and its shades up to black in contrast with white and pale yellow as a nascent color.

For the writer and poet Victor Hugo, the base is the black from which unfolds a scale of grey to the white of the Light. Interest of other colours is their contrast with black.

A partir du titre, qui reprend celui, célèbre, d''un film muet de Charlie Chaplin (un chef d'œuvre, au moment où le cinéma parlant émergeait), j'ai eu envie, sans référence explicite au contenu de ce film et à son histoire romantique, de suggérer les aventures de la nuit en ville (qui peuvent être joyeuses ou tragiques). Le film se déroule la journée, mon tableau évoque, en contrepoint, la nuit urbaine. /

Starting from the title, which takes the famous one of a silent film by Charlie Chaplin (a masterpiece, at the moment when talking cinema was emerging), I wanted, without explicit reference to the content of this film and its romantic history, to suggest the adventures of night in the city (which can be joyful or tragic). The film takes place during the day, my painting evokes, in counterpoint, the urban night.

Le croisement de la verticale et de l'horizontale est souvent interprété comme un principe d'équilibre et de stabilité. Il a été considéré comme un principe de Vie référant à une divinité : l'archétype du partage entre la verticalité de la transcendance et l'horizontalité de l'immanence. La croix inspire confiance. Pour les Chrétiens, cette confiance est la foi en Dieu.
L'Islam interdit la représentation, la fabrication et l'utilisation de la Croix chrétienne comme symbole sacré, car "Allah est le seul Dieu" : c'est La Lumière qui est le symbole d'Allah selon le Coran (le symbolisme de la lumière se trouve aussi dans la Bible (la Torah, l'Ancien Testament pour les Juifs, et dans les Évangiles). 
Pour ceux qui ne se reconnaissent dans aucune religion, pour les athées, elle est un objet matériel qui a été surinterprété et sacralisé par les hommes, une superstition le plus souvent au service d'un pouvoir. Un simple objet matériel,  comme une clé démonte-roue ou un tire-bouchon par exemple. /

Intersection of vertical and horizontal is often interpreted as a principle of balance and stability. It was considered as a principle of Life referring to a divinity: the archetype of the sharing between the verticality of transcendence and the horizontality of immanence. The cross inspires trust. For Christians, this trust is faith in God.
Islam forbids the representation, manufacture and use of the Christian Cross as a sacred symbol, because "Allah is the only God": it is Light that is the symbol of Allah according to the Koran (the symbolism of light is also found in the Bible (the Torah, the Old Testament for Jews, and the Gospels). 
For those who do not recognize themselves in any religion, for atheists, it is a material object that has been over-interpreted and sacralized by men, a superstition most often at the service of a power. A simple physical object, such as a wrench or corkscrew.

SYMBOLISME ET SPIRITUALITÉ

 

 

Étymologiquement, en grec ou en latin, la croix signifie potence, le bois auquel on pendait les condamnés,, les vaincus.

Religieusement, la Croix réfère à l'église catholique, à la Crucifixion du Christ et à sa Résurrection telles que rapportées dans les Évangiles : elle est considérée depuis le IVème siècle comme la "Vraie Croix" ou "Sainte Croix".

Mais la symbolique de la croix est très ancienne, son utilisation comme symbole sacré est attestée chez les anciens Babyloniens de Chaldée (IXème siècle avant J.-C.), et on la retrouve en Asie, dans les régions amérindiennes,  au Mexique, en Afrique, dans les religions païennes et jusque chez les Romains.

Les historiens des civilisations étudient le symbolisme de la croix dans sa relative universalité et la variété de ses occurrences.

SYMBOLISM AND SPIRITUALITY

 

 

Etymologically, in Greek or Latin, cross means gallows, the wood to which the condemned and the defeated were hanged.

Religiously, the Cross refers to Catholic Church, the Crucifixion of Christ and his Resurrection as reported in the Gospels: it is considered since the fourth century as the "True Cross" or "Holy Cross".

But symbolism of the cross is very old, its use as a sacred symbol is attested to by the ancient Babylonians of Chaldea (9th century BC), and is found in Asia, Amerindian regions, Mexico, Africa, in pagan religions and even among the Romans.

Historians of civilizations study symbolism of the cross in its relative universality and the variety of its occurrences.

Après, l'intitulé du tableau joue avec le titre célèbre du livre puis du film 'Cinquante nuances de Grey" roman érotique sadomasochiste. Mais Grey était le nom du personnage principal masculin, terme signifiant aussi "gris" en anglais. Pas de Grey ici, des gris oui mais ceux d'un soir d'été ou d'un ciel d'automne.  J'ai choisi de "jouer" avec ce titre pour le détourner et le "retourner", pour évoquer nos visions du monde, multiples et complexes, de manière pacifiée et patinée. /

According to a French colloquial expression "To make seen all colors to somedoby", meaning "to make have a hard life to somebody ", is to make him endure hardships and inconveniences. 
Here, on the contrary, I wanted to paint colors of life, all in nuances, gently,
Afterwards, the title of this painting plays with the famous title of the book then of the film 'Fifty Shades of Grey', a sadomasochistic erotic novel. But Grey was the name of the main male character, a term also meaning "gray" in English. No Grey here, grays yes but those of a summer evening or an autumn sky. I have chosen to "play" with this title to divert it and "turn it around", to evoke our visions of the world, multiple and complex, in a peaceful and patinated way.

PASSION (2023)

ABSTRACTION LYRIQUE

 

Le mot "passion" signifie étymologiquement "souffrance". Dans la Bible, il est employé pour désigner la "Passion du Christ". "Passif" a la même signification. Mais au sens moderne, le mot passion est utilisé au sens d'enthousiasme, Une passion peut certes être dévorante et retrouver son sens premier. L'amour-passion comporte un risque mais il emporte tout. Il n'est point de passion raisonnable.
La passion implique de transcender sa passivité dans l'action, la réalisation d'un rêve grandiose, de s'élever. Être en feu. Ici, les couleurs chaudes jusqu'au feu, rencontrent les couleurs froides.  C'est l'épreuve de la passion. La motivation, l'élan qui renverse les résistances. Au risque de s'accomplir ou de se perdre. La création artistique, en particulier abstraite, est œuvre de passion, d'émancipation.

LYRICAL ABSTRACT

 

The word "passion" means etymologically "suffering". In the Bible, it is used to refer to the "Passion of Christ". Passive" has the same meaning. But in the modern sense, the word "passion" is used in the sense of enthusiasm, A passion can certainly be devouring and regain its original meaning. Love-passion carries a risk but it takes everything. There is not  reasonable passion.
Passion involves transcending one’s passivity in action, realizing a great dream, to elevate oneself. Being on fire.  Here, warm colors, up to fire, meet cold colors. It is the test of passion. Motivation that reverses resistances. At the risk of being fulfilled or lost.
Artistic creation, especially abstract, is work of passion and emancipation.

AURA (2023)

MINIMALISME COLORÉ

 

J'ai d'abord peint un anneau mordoré avec des nuances. J'ai travaillé ensuite des ondes qui se propagent vers l'extérieur et vers le haut. Puis des ondes qui se répercutent à l'intérieur de l'anneau et qui semblent creuser un passage avec un effet de profondeur : ce passage symbolise-t-il un aller vers une lumière blanche ou bien l'advenue de cette lumière vers notre regard ? Mystère ! J'ai ajouté, en bas, un bleu qui, comme une mer, accentue l'effet de surgissement de l'anneau central et de son magnétisme. Je vois une aura : quel objet, quel être ou quel Être entoure-t-elle ? Mystère ! Car ce n'est pas une énigme à résoudre.

AURA (2023)

 

COLORED MINIMALISM

 

First I painted a bronze ring with shades. I then worked on waves that propagate outwards and upwards. Then waves which reverberate inside the ring and which seem to dig a passage with a depth effect: does this passage symbolize a going towards a white Light or the occur of this light towards our gaze? Mystery ! I added, at the bottom, a blue which, like a sea, accentuates arising of central ring and its magnetism. I see an aura: what object, what being or what Being does it surround? Mystery! Because it's not a riddle to solve.

Pour celles et ceux qui ont lu l'œuvre fantastique de Tolkien, en particulier "Le Seigneur des Anneaux" et/ou vu son adaptation au cinéma réalisée par Peter Jackson dans  une magistrale Trilogie, J'ai peint ce tableau après avoir revu cette Trilogie dans l'émotion de la fin de l'opus 3 'Le Seigneur des Anneaux - Le Retour du Roi". Les Elfes, êtres éternels, symboles du Bien et de la Sagesse, après avoir contribué à éliminer le Mal (pouvoir et violence, tentative d'embrigadement et d'aliénation de tous les êtres), repartent, affaiblis par ces guerres, pour reprendre leur vie dans leur propre monde au sein de la Contré (Terre du Milieu). Ils s'éloignent dans un bateau nimbé d'une aura lumineuse, vers "Les Havres Gris", lieu à partir duquel ils se dirigeront vers l'Ouest dans leur univers mystérieux et invisible ("Les Terres éternelles" ou "Royaume béni" ou "Royaume bienheureux").
C'est pourquoi j'ai choisi d'intituler ce tableau minimaliste et symbolique "Les Havres de Paix" pour suggérer ce retour vers le pur mystère d'une vie pacifique et heureuse. Mon travail est volontairement épuré afin de simplement donner à voir l'essence de ce voyage. /

To those who have read Tolkien's fantasy world, in particular "The Lord of the Rings" and/or seen its film adaptation directed by Peter Jackson in a masterful Trilogy, I painted this picture after having reviewed this Trilogy, in the emotion of the end of opus 3 "The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King". The Elves (Eldar), eternal beings, symbols of Good and Wisdom, having contributed to eliminating Evil (power and violence, attempt to enlist and alienate all beings), set off again, weakened by these wars, to resume their lives in their own world within the Contré (Middle-Earth). a luminous aura, towards "Grey Havens", a place from which they will head west into their mysterious and invisible universe: Undying Lands (Aman).
This is why I chose to entitle this minimalist and symbolic painting "The Havens of Peace" to suggest this return to the pure mystery of a peaceful and happy life. My work is deliberately refined in order to simply show the essence of this journey.

Une rencontre ne va pas de soi. De l'Autre est en jeu. /

A moving puzzle is a plastic challenge. The nesting of two parts implies a separation to be filled. It opens up a space-time, an in-between as a potential space that unites and separates two entities coming together. Third-included,mediation.
